Shrey Parikh is the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion, beating out Ishaan Gupta in an epic championship showdown in Washington D.C. The 14-year-old eighth-grader from Rancho Cucamonga, California, emerged victorious in a thrilling lightning-round spell-off that challenged speed, accuracy, concentration and poise under pressure to claim the coveted championship. Both finalists had come through eighteen tough rounds of traditional spelling without error, and the contest had boiled down to the tiebreaker technique that was designed to produce a sole champion. In the final 90-second spell-off, Shrey spelled 32 words correctly while Ishaan Gupta, a bright 12-year-old challenger from Jersey City, N.J. spelled 25 phrases correctly. When Shrey was declared the winner of one of the most prestigious academic competitions in the United States, the crowd inside DAR Constitution Hall erupted in cheers.
