The Latest: Bill to end government shutdown passes the Senate, heads to House next for final vote

The longest U.S. government shutdown in history moved closer to an end Monday after a small group of Senate Democrats reached a deal with Republicans, breaking a six-week stalemate with a 60-40 vote, though the shutdown could continue for a few more days as the House returns to vote on the legislation.

The bill does not resolve expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits, which Democrats had sought to extend. The shutdown has disrupted federal services, including flight operations and SNAP food aid, with the Trump administration seeking to keep SNAP payments frozen while families struggle.

States like New Mexico have enacted legislation to provide state-funded food assistance amid the federal disruption. Meanwhile, clean energy groups sued the administration over cuts to projects in Democratic-leaning states, California lawmakers proposed $23 billion in bonds for scientific research in response to federal cuts, and federal courts in Manhattan closed on Fridays due to the shutdown.

Trump proposed $10,000 bonuses for air traffic controllers and defended his foreign policy focus, including comments praising Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa as a “tough” leader, while criticizing Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for losing focus on domestic affordability issues..
